Shipping Barrels

A Guide to Shipping Barrels to Jamaica, Barbados, St Kitts, Nevis and other Caribbean destinations.

Quite often we hear from people who would like to ship some items over to the Caribbean but don't know where to start. Perhaps it is gifts for Christmas, or clothing and food items for relatives.

One of the most popular methods of shipping items to the Caribbean is through the use of shipping barrels or drums, although it is perfectly possible to ship cardboard boxes, or cartons. You could even decide to send a crate, although you must be aware of certain limitations when shipping crates.

Transpakship have been shipping barrels and drums to the Caribbean for over 40 years, and in that time have gathered a lot of experience along the way. We would like to pass on some of our barrel shipping experience to help make the process as easy as possible for you.

What type of barrel should I use to ship to the Caribbean?

There are two different types of shipping barrels for sale with Transpakship; Plastic barrels and Metal drums, although you can use your own drums purchased from elsewhere.

Plastic Barrels

It is quite common for people to buy used barrels for shipping, which may require cleaning, however all of our plastic barrels are supplied new. The new plastic barrels' dimensions are 100cm tall and 55cm in diameter, and are ideal should you wish to re-use them at the final destination. If you do wish to re-use the plastic shipping barrel for water storage when it arrives in the Caribbean we can also supply a tap that can be attached to the barrel.

Metal Drums

Our metal drums are a cheap alternative to the plastic shipping barrels, and are supplied as reconditioned drums. These metal drums are cleaned before supply and stand 34 inches tall and 24 inches in diameter.

Is there anything I can't ship?

As a general rule of thumb no hazardous cargo is allowed and you are allowed similar items as you would be able to carry into the country as if you were bringing the goods as luggage on a flight.

One thing to be aware of is the limitation for sending wooden crates to Jamaica or shipping wooden crates to Barbados, as any wood sent to these Caribbean destinations must be treated and show the symbol to the left.

Another limitation for shipping to Jamaica is for sending old tyres which is not permissable. For more advice please contact our team.

If you are planning on shipping to St Kitts, Nevis or other Caribbean destinations most items are allowed, however if you wish to ship hazardous material please contact our team for more detailed information.

Will my barrels be secure?

If you are concerned about the security of your barrel we are able to supply security seals for the shipping barrels. A security seal is a strip of metal with a unique serial number that locks the barrel and requires cutting tools to remove, which will only be done at the destination port, in your presence, or the presence of your appointed consignee.

How do I get my barrels collected?

Transpakship collect your barrels to ship to the Caribbean weekly in most areas of the country, including London, Birmingham, Leeds, Luton, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Manchester. For more detail see our collection schedule. Collection charges apply.

Our representative will arrange a visit to assess your individual needs, what you are looking to ship, dates that you would like to travel and any storage requirements.
